Middle School Education (6-8th

grade) Master's Degree with Licensure Program

For individuals who have earned a non-teaching Bachelor’s degree from a regionally institution and wish to qualify for the initial Virginia teaching license in grades 6-8th.

Admission:

  •  Earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum overall  GPA of 2.80
  • Passing score on Praxis I or equivalent scores on SAT or ACT as prescribed by the Virginia Board of Education
  • Passing Scores on either the Graduate Records Exam(GRE) or the Miller Analogy Test(MAT)
  • Submit the Graduate Studies Application for admission on-line by the established deadline (schedule an appointment in the Office of Teacher Education Services and Advising with program advisor,  757-683-3348)

Continuance:    Must be met prior to the start of the teacher candidate internship semester.

  • Maintain a minimum overall GPA of 3.00
  • Passing score on Praxis II for the appropriate Middle School content:
    Middle School English, Test Code 0049, passing score of 164
    Middle School Mathematics, Test Code 0069, passing score of 163
    Middle School Science, Test Code 0439, passing score of 162
    Middle School Social Studies, Test Code 0089, passing score of 160
  • Passing score of 470 on the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) Code 091 and 092
  • Complete all course work  required in your program of study with at least a C-
  • Complete all course work  within 6 years of initial enrollment
  • Pass written Comprehensive Exam
  • Submit the teacher candidate internship application for student teaching placement in accordance with the established deadlines
